Marriage, according to the first definition of Merriam-Webster Dictionary, is ‘the state of being united to a person of the opposite sex as husband or wife in a consensual and contractual relationship recognized by law’. The age of eligibility for marriage, as per the Indian Special Marriages Act (1954), is 21 years (completed) for male and 18 years for female.
The earliest recorded reference to man and woman as husband and wife goes back to 4000 BC, if we work with what is written in Genesis.
“From the beginning of the creation, God made them male and female” said Jesus Christ, “for this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh; so then they are no longer two, but one flesh“. He further stated, ‘therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate’. He also made it clear to the people around Him that marriage ends on earth and that there is no sexual relationship beyond this earthly life.
