Any physician who is formally trained to conduct surgery is a surgeon. Physicians who conduct surgery may be specialists such as nephrologists, gynaecologists and heart specialists, or general surgeons. Since it is a job of great precision, surgeons are usually trained for longer periods than other medical specialists.
